HAVE YOUR SAY IN THE FUTURE OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

13 July 2010

The Chamber recently received notice from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (DfBIS) that the existing Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) will be abolished.  To replace the RDAs, DfBIS are inviting Councils and Business Groups to develop proposals and form Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs).  As proposed in the Budget, a forthcoming White Paper on sub-National economic growth will set out the approach of DfBIS in more detail.  Legislation to abolish RDAs and implement LEPs will be introduced to Parliament in the autumn of 2010.

LEPs would tackle all infrastructure priorities, and continue with the transition to low-carbon economies.  LEPs will also need to work closely with Colleges and Universities, and other relevant stakeholders.  DfBIS believe that local/regional boundaries do not reflect current economic areas.  For example, Yeovil and Sherborne are close geographically and economically, but being Governed by two different County Authorities sometimes hinders closer economic links, and LEPs will better reflect local/regional business demographics.

For effective partnership, DfBIS believe that business and civic leaders should work together, with equal representation on the boards of LEPs, with a prominent business leader to chair the boards.  DfBIS may consider elected officals such as mayors if desired by the LEP.  Robust governence will ensure proper accountability for delivery from each LEP.

The deadline for outline proposals for LEPs ends on 6th September 2010.  Yeovil Chamber intend to be part of this change, which is key to the economic future of Yeovil the South West.  To ensure you have a say, please get in touch with the Chamber as soon as possible.

The Chamber has been tasked, and we need your help.
