Chamber lobby for improved rail services
13 March 2008
The Chamber is actively campaining for better rail services in the South West to exploit the location of Yeovil as a key North-South and East-West transport junction.
In conjunction with local MP David Laws, the Chamber has been lobbying for the promised investment in the Exeter - Waterloo service including the dualling of the track an increasing train frequency and improving the timetable for business users. The Chamber is also fighting for improvements to the Bristol Weymouth service where reliability and number of trains run is at an all time low.
Executive Committee member Antionette Young who has been spearheading the camaign says "With 19,000 more households planned for the Yeovil area over the next 20 years, its vital that we get the transport infrastructure in place to support this population growth. The 2012 Olympics will bring thousand of people to the sailing events at Weymouth and yet the Yeovil-Weymouth train service is one of the worst I have ever experienced. We urgently need to turn up the pressure to ensure that this service is improved."
