Overview of Carbon Accounting for Businesses
In this session, Vanessa Macalliver, co-founder and CCO at xtonnes, will talk about the basics of carbon accounting. This will provide an introduction for businesses who want to understand the carbon impact of their activities and start to think about their decarbonisation journey. This session will explore the different carbon accounting methods that exist, their benefits and limitations and what steps businesses can take to measure their carbon emissions.
Businesses face a range of challenges linked to sustainability including how to chart their pathway to Net Zero. Carbon accounting is a new topic for many companies and it is important to know what to focus on and how to quantify carbon emissions in a cost-efficient way. In this session, you will learn about the basics of carbon accounting including the different calculation methods available, the importance of data granularity, how to collect data as a business and how to quantify and communicate impact.

Vanessa has experience using data to improve decision making and drive change across finance, retail, government and telecoms, with the Boston Consulting Group and at the Bank of England and UK Government. She has advised businesses both small and large businesses on their current and projected carbon impacts. Vanessa has a bilingual MBA from IESE Business School and a BA in History from Jesus College, Cambridge.
